Many of the Taliban leaders and other terrorists who destroyed Afghanistan were also graduates of Deoband

"Anyone Who Claims that Jihad Does Not Originate from Islam Is Lying!"

"Islam has practiced Jihad  from its earliest days. The war against the Kuffar was not simply a just war, but it was a religious duty, depicted as a good deed that guarantees a Muslim's entry into Paradise. Furthermore, Muslims have never hesitated to advocate the duty of spreading their religion throughout the world; and thus Jihad became the ideal way to accomplish that goal. While there are certain Ayaat in the Qur'an that call for tolerance toward Christians and Jews, other Ayaat call for fighting them. As for those who are neither Christians, nor Jews, they face no choice but embracing Islam, or migration, or death. The Qur'an addresses the Arab nation as a unique and chosen nation entrusted by Allah with the task of spreading his knowledge and will all over the world: "Ye are the best community that hath been raised up for mankind. Ye enjoin right conduct and forbid indecency; and ye believe in Allah. And if the People of the Scripture had believed it had been better for them. Some of them are believers; but most of them are evil-livers." Surat Al-'Imran (The House of 'Imran) 3:110. -- Jacob Thomas

Don't write off Obama's Middle-East peace initiative

Obama has put his own and his country's credibility and name on the line in his repeated demand that Israel freeze settlements unconditionally. Netanyahu responded by rejecting this, and by simultaneously expanding settlements. The United States cannot now just throw up its hands in exasperation and say that it tried and failed. What might happen next? ...

All the evidence from Obama's character, performance in winning the presidency, and policy actions on multiple domestic and international fronts since January indicates that he does not undertake initiatives such as this lightly. ...

The president has moved decisively on this because he understands how Arab-Israeli peace could impact positively on several major issues he faces, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, and terrorism. ...  On Mideast peace-making, Obama faces vicious domestic opponents who will try to unseat him. -- Rami G. Khouri

Religion in the public sphere

A national survey conducted by the Centre for Developing Societies, New Delhi, testifies to the growing influence of religion in Indian society. According to this survey, four out of 10 people are very religious and five out of 10 are religious. That is to say that 90 per cent of the respondents claimed to be religious — performing rituals, visiting places of worship and undertaking pilgrimages. Among them, 30 per cent claimed to have become more religious during the last five years. An increase in the number of religious institutions is also an indication of the greater hold of religion on society. Enlightenment and modernity in India have not led to the decline of the influence of religiosity. If anything, it has only increased. -- K.N. Panikkar

War on Terror

The Way Out of Afghanistan

There are three ways to change security conditions in Afghanistan. First, increase American troops. Second, increase Afghan troops. Third, shrink the number of enemy forces by making them switch sides or lay down their arms. That third strategy is what worked so well in Iraq and urgently needs to be adopted in Afghanistan. A few years from now, we can be sure that Afghanistan will still be poor, corrupt, and dysfunctional. But if we make the right deals, it will be ruled by leaders who keep the country inhospitable to Al Qaeda and terrorist groups like it. That's my definition of success. -- Fareed Zakaria

Embrace the Quran, Let go the teachings of Mullahs, classic or contemporary

Many of the Taliban leaders and other terrorists who destroyed Afghanistan were also graduates of Deoband

I believe that this is the basic and fatal flaw that is solely responsible for the demise of the Muslims including the old scholars mentioned in Article. They do not know the Quran. Without knowing the Quran they have embarked on acquiring religious knowledge from their own sources many of which are illogical and also false. And most unfortunately after the passage of a 1000 years, the writings of these so called religious scholars have come to be almost engraved in stone.  Today in Malaysia if a Muslim does not subscribe to the religious sect of Ahlul Sunnah Wal Jamaah he can be sent to jail. For example if you are a SHiah you can be sent to jail. In Shiah majority countries like Iran (and now Iraq) the opposite happens i.e. the Ahlul Sunnah Wal Jamaah minority can be persecuted or discriminated against because of their religious beliefs. I would like to quote two examples to explain further what I mean when I say that the scholars do not know the Quran. In India there are famous religious madrassahs like Darul Uloom in a place called Deoband. Folks like Nik Aziz Nik Mat the Menteri Besar of Kelantan have been educated in religion from Deoband. Many of the Taliban leaders and other terrorists who destroyed Afghanistan were also graduates of Deoband. -- Syed Akbar Ali

Muslim Brotherhood on Violence in Islam, Shariat, Nuclear weapons and Egyptian, Arab politics

Islam and its comprehensive ways in which the Muslim Brotherhood endorses, unequivocally rejects adopting the  shedding of  innocent blood or the  use  of violence to assume political power. Islam's method for changing society and reform basically taught by Allah are with wisdom and fair preaching and persuasion. Quality, perfection, exaltedness and consistency are the most important characteristics of Islam where the form of the argument relies on integrity of thought, fine style, purity, and the sublime goals and nobility making the following of Islam easy. If we controversially agreed to use violence in assuming power it will give legitimacy to all people to utilize the tools enabling them to use the force to seize the reins of the power.  Thus, the country will remain plagued by permanent disturbances and instability. -- Prof. Mohamed Habib, Deputy Chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood

Vande Mataram Controversy and Fatwa of Darul Uloom, Deoband

This song (Vande Mataram ) may be a religious song, but it cannot be considered a national song. One of the many reasons is - the native soil in the form of Durga Maa is considered the creator of all blessings and entire knowledge, power and art has been attached to it. The reader is kneeling down at her feet in supplication and declares in reverence that he worships her. Any Muslim who believes in the Oneness (Monotheism) of the Almighty Allah-e-Kareem cannot tolerate this song even for a single moment, no question of singing it. A Muslim can consider his native land like his precious beloved, but absolutely not his creator to be worshipped. -- Maulana Nadeemul Wajidi (Translated from Urdu by Raihan Nezami)

The Priest, the President and the Persian Peugeot

Ahmadinejad, Iran's Lalu Prasad?

You can even compare some of the political leaders of the two countries. President Ahmadinejad, the son of a blacksmith, comes from the underclass and still lives in a lower-middle class neighbourhood. "His style," writes Majd, "the bad suits, the cheap Windbreaker, the shoddy shoes, and the unstylish haircut, a style he proudly maintains well into his presidency is a signal to the working class that he is still one of them." He drives no limousine but a Peugeot, and delivers his speeches in pedestrian Persian, the kind that is spoken on the streets and is understood by all. Inasmuch, he is not a far cry from the Lalu Prasad brand of politician, who won election after election riding on his carefully cultivated rustic appeal, or even Mamata Banerjee, the railway minister who still lives in a lower middle class neighbourhood and drives to Parliament in a Maruti Zen. -- Saif Shahin

Zakat Al Fitr Essential for All Muslims, Says Scholar

"Muslim men are obligatorily required to pay Zakat Al Fitr for themselves and dependants such as their wives, children and servants. Failing to give Zakat is a big sin, and one shall also miss a valuable opportunity to have his or her fasting fully rectified and purified of minor mistakes," he pointed out. He said that Zakat Al Fitr may be given in food or money, as convenient for the poor. "During the Holy Prophet's time, Zakat Al Fitr was given in food; an average of Saa (2.5-3.5kg) of barley, date, raisin, dried yoghurt, or later wheat or rice, because these were common foods in Madinah and its surroundings, and currency was rarely used. The Holy Prophet's companion, Moaz Ibn Jabal, and righteous Caliph Omar Ibn Abdulaziz (May Allah be pleased with them) later accepted Zakat Al Fitr in cloth," he stated.  "Now, the situation is quite different. Many scholars, including Imam Abu Hanifa, agreed that Zakat Al Fitr may be given in money and that differs from time to time as per the value of currency," he said, noting that Zakat Al Fitr has been set this year as Dh25. However people have the option to pay more. -- Ahmed Shaaban

Why Islam? From a Muslim convert to all seekers of truth

Another problem is that by the time non-Muslims examine Islam, other religions have typically heightened their scepticism: If every "God-given" scripture we have ever seen is corrupt, how can the Islamic scripture be different? If charlatans have manipulated religions to suit their desires, how can we imagine the same not to have happened with Islam? Sure, previous religions have been corrupted, and that is why we have a chain of revelations. Ask yourself: why would God send another revelation if the preceding scriptures were still pure? Only if preceding scriptures were corrupted would God need to send another revelation, to keep mankind on the straight path of His design. -- Laurence B. Brown

My imam father came after me with an axe: Hanna Shah

The story of one of the many British Muslim girls who are oppressed and married off against their will.  Hannah Shah had been raped by her father and faced a forced marriage. She fled, became a Christian and now fears for her life, as apostasy is punishable by death in radical Islam.

It's fair to say that Hannah Shah is an evangelical Christian, who clearly feels a duty to spread her new faith to Muslims– something with which the Church of England's eternally emollient establishment is very uncomfortable and the government even more so. She points out that even within this notionally Christian country, people are "persecuted" for evangelism of even the mildest sort. She cites the recent cases of the nurse who was suspended for offering to pray for a patient and the foster parents who were struck off after a Muslim girl in their care converted to Christianity. "Such people – I'm not talking about apostates like me – have been persecuted or ostracised in this country simply because they want to share their faith with others. People call this political correctness but I actually think it is based on a fear of Muslims, what they might do if provoked." -- Dominic Lawson

India: A mystical intervention on the side of Barelvis, stalls the rise of Wahhabism

People who had gone over to the Wahhabi mosque and others who had hidden their true sympathies with the Barelvis have started to drift back. Whereas the Barelvi mosque used to be nearly empty with about 30 people, recent Eid prayers saw close to 300 people in attendance. Wahhabis in Bilehra who openly condemned anything involving the veneration of living or dead men as innovations in Islam, have found themselves drawn to a quiet, wandering man. A few refuse to acknowledge Mastaan Baba but, according to people who live there, their wives and daughters regularly and secretly go to visit him! It seems there are now a couple of more people in Bilehra who claim to be Mastaan Baba. Regardless of whether this man is genuine or not, it seems he has managed to single-handedly and unintentionally stall the rise of Wahhabism, in and around Bilehra. -- Ali khan
