The Tragedy Of Karbala And Its Remembrance In India: A Unique Legacy

Probably India is the only country in the world where Muharram (Chehlum and Chup Taazia) processions can pass through Raj Path adjacent to such important monuments as Parliament and President's House. Our beloved country does not give this sort of permission to any other religious group. It is a matter of pride for us that this procession did not stop even in the stormy times of 1947. The compassion inherent in Indian culture is indeed unique, not to be found elsewhere. That is why the sacrifice rendered by Imam Hussain 14 centuries ago is remembered better and with greater fervour in India than perhaps anywhere else in the world. -- Ali Abdi
